For 2D (two-dimensional) operating mode (OM) GPS requires lock on minimum three satellites. The 2D OM will provide only horizontal coordinates without elevation readings.
For 3D (three-dimensional) operating mode requires GPS lock on at least 4 satellites. In this scenario GPS will provide horizontal coordinates together with elevation.
